Selflessness, Humility & Leadership

Although I was not in class for this discussion, I really wish I was.
You can not sum up 'doing something' in just a few words. Because the simplest action, or the biggest one, can make the world of a difference. For example, smiling at someone: you might be smiling at that person who was really down in the dumps today, and maybe they just needed someone random to smile at them. Or there are the big actions, such as organizing events that make the school special as well. Every single student in this school 'does something' to make IDCI.... well.. IDCI. I agree that there are many more things that we all COULD try to do for the school, but the smallest actions make a huge difference most times.
Every high school is filled with one or two of those cocky kids who think they are so much better than everyone else. (i hate those kids. really? we're all human!) I am well aware that it is human characteristic to elevate yourself above certain people, but honestly i try my best not to. Because to be honest, life's short. Spending too much time picking and choosing who you would like to talk to, or who you want to be friends with gets you nowhere. Spending too much time alone, on the other hand, gets you even farther into nowhere. Human is Human. We all have a heart, and that unites each and every one of us. We all have a brain, but those need to be eliminated. People get way too caught up thinking about different types of people and 'cliques' that they forget how to live. "Its not the life in your people that count, its the people in your life" (if that made sense). I think every person on this planet needs to take time out of each and every day to put themselves in someone else's shoes. Or maybe you HAVE been there.. if you have, think back to that time. I was a minor niner once, and it honestly didn't suck so bad. I have respect for the grade 9's because I've been in their shoes, and I am trying my hardest to make their high school years amazing for as long as I am here. I hope that in future years this years grade 9s will make as much effort as our class has to make them have a great high school experience!!
I am not proud of how I've served the school so far. Although I have made an effort to make this school a better place, there is much more that I can do, and we can do for the school. I am well aware that perfect does not exist, and that no school will ever be perfect. But there is a lot more that we can do to perfect the school. I think we have a very very powerful class. A lot of clique-diversity and that makes us have a huge voice over the school. Everyone has a different background, a different story, different friends, and different voices. A group of best friends really has the power to affect no one. A group of people united with a common goal, all from different back grounds, has the power to affect everyone. Craig Kielburger didn't do it alone!
I'd like to think that there isn't anything that has stopped me from acting out in this school, but honestly there has been. I cant pinpoint what they are. I try my hardest, and I am not proud of my choices sometimes. But for some people, including me, it's really hard to act out alone. This leadership class is really giving me a voice, because I know I'm not alone and there is always someone, whether they are my best friend or not, whether I've talked to them before or not, whether we've had problems in the past or not, that I can rely on! F-A-M-I-L-Y.
I think the grade 9's do deserve a lot of respect. They are struggling through a hard time in their life. New school, new friends, new classes, new system, new people, new surroundings. big school, fake friends, fun classes, confusing system, scary people, and awkward surroundings. They have a lot to deal with. We, as mentors, owe them respect and consideration because yes, as much as you'd like to say you were never picked on for being a grade 9, you WERE once the laughing stock of the entire school. I doubt any grade 9's are able to read this but no, we're not as scary as you think, and we're more that happy to give you a hand if you need one. Whether it be answering a question, directing you somewhere, or smiling at you. Someone in this school is always likely to help! More than one most definitely. And those people are NOT that hard to find. :)

I want to add to the whole hasting vs fun thingamabobber.
I think it'd be fun, but as long as the grade 9's werent being humiliated. WHY DO THEY DESERVE THIS ? is it really that fun to tape people to poles? how does that benefit you? really? hahahahah. i do not understand initiation :) just let them have fun!

thanks! ill stop ranting now.

oh, btw, leadership is awesome. and so are you. every single one of you.
